Iga Swiatek pips Coco Gauff to reach last-eight

Iga Swiatek got the better of Coco Gauff in their fourth-round clash at the Miami Open on Monday. The Pole needed an hour and 16 minutes to complete the 6-3, 6-1 win against the American 14th seed. Swiatek saved both break points, she faced while converting four break points on Gauff’s serve.
With respect to first and second serve points, the soon-to-be world no. 1 won 78% of her first-serve points and almost 59% of her second-serve points. In comparison, Gauff won 52% of her first-serve points and almost 41% of her second-serve points.
This was Swiatek’s 14th victory in a row, going back to the Qatar TotalEnergies Open. She’s also reached the quarter-finals of all three WTA 1000 events that have been played so far this season. In the quarter-finals, Swiatek will take on Petra Kvitova.
The 28th seed ousted the 21st-seeded Veronika Kudermetova, 7-6(5), 6-4 in an hour and 52 minutes. The match between Kvitova and Kudermetova saw both players lose initial leads across both sets before Kvitova prevailed to make it to the quarters.
Miami Open: Naomi Osaka’s impressiveness continues
Paula Badosa and Jessica Pegula completed the quarter-finals in the bottom half of the draw in Miami. The fifth seed from Spain stopped Linda Fruhvirtova 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 22 minutes in their round-of-16 encounter.
Both players faced six break points each but where Badosa saved all but one break point, Fruhvirtova lost her serve five times across the match. Badosa had six more winners than the Czech – 19 to the latter’s 13 and three fewer unforced errors than Fruhvirtova’s 20.
Pegula, the 16th seed advanced to the quarters after her opponent, Anhelina Kalinina retired midway in their match. The American had won the first set 6-0 at the time of Kalinina’s retirement. Meanwhile, at the top of the draw, Belinda Bencic and Daria Saville, and Naomi Osaka and Danielle Collins will vie for semi-final spots.
