Asked about the explosion of prize money in golf, while an $18 million bonus will be awarded to the winner of the FedEx Cup, the two-time Major winner Xander Schauffele gave a very honest answer and put into perspective the importance that these sums have for the best… The second stage of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the BMW Championship, is being played this week and most of the questions from American journalists who follow the PGA Tour seem to revolve essentially around two subjects: who will be the player of the year in 2024 and who will pocket the jackpot promised to the one who wins at East Lake… For the first question, Xander Schauffele, with his two Major titles this year, is obviously a legitimate candidate.

Scottie Scheffler, the Olympic champion, winner of the Masters and five other prestigious titles on the American circuit, is the big favorite. Opinions differ, but the winner of the PGA Championship and the British Open himself acknowledged that the world number 1’s year is “special”.

“I’ve won twice, he’s won seven times, that’s how I see it,” acknowledged Xander Schauffele with great fair play. Scottie has had an incredible season. We’re all chasing him. I was probably the one who came closest to him, but I’m still a long way off.” On the other subject that is stirring up debate across the Atlantic, Schauffele also answered with great sincerity.

“In the era of inflated prize money, is $25 million a gain that makes sense to you? Does $15 million, $10 million, $5 million, the kind of money you’re going to be playing for over the next two weeks, make sense to you?” one reporter ventured.
