‘I went crazy, this one hurts’

Arthur Fils is the only player who reached the quarter-final at all three Masters 1000 events this year. However, he failed to reach the semi-final following losses to Daniil Medvedev, Jakub Mensik and Carlos Alcaraz.

The latter one hurts the most, with Arthur having a massive chance to beat the four-time Major winner! Fils and Alcaraz embraced their first duel in the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-final. The Spaniard prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 23 minutes.

Two young gun performed a thrilling clash, pushing each other to the limits from start to finish. Arthur had a massive opportunity to advance! He missed three break chances at 5-5 in the second set and a 3-1 advantage in the decider!

Fils felt angry and frustrated after the match after being so close to topple world no. 3. He lost his concentration in the pivotal moments, which cost him dearly, dropping the final five games and propelling his rival through.

Alcaraz claimed ten points more than Fils thanks to that late push. The Spaniard defended seven of 11 break points, suffering one break after the opener and taking the pivotal points. Arthur struggled behind the second serve and faced 14 break points.

The Frenchman defended nine but lost serve five times to terminate his campaign in the last eight. It was a heavyweight contest, although they sprayed almost 100 unforced errors. Carlos finished on a more reduced 18-41 ratio and welcomed 54 loose shots from the other side. 

Alcaraz forged a 68-59 buffer from the baseline and made the difference in that area. Arthur was off to a flying start, providing two early breaks and moving 3-0 in front. Carlos pulled one break back in game four and…
