Rafael Nadal says having a child at home is “special” and admits being a father gives him happiness. Nadal, 37, and his wife Mery ‘Xisca’ Perello welcomed their first child in 2022 October. Nadal, whose son turned one earlier this month, has been able to spend lots of time with his family this year after sustaining a serious psoas injury at the Australian Open.

“I have always taken things well. But in that sense, of course having a child at home who is also the first is always special, because of course it makes you happy in many moments. But I think that I would have been fine without it too, because I have accepted and tolerated it well throughout my life.

But without a doubt it helps and gives me happiness,” Nadal told EFE.

Nadal on Australian Open tournament director’s comments

This month, the news of Australian Open boss Craig Tiley confirming Nadal’s participation in Melbourne spread like wildfire.

After pretty much every news outlet reported that Nadal would be playing at the Australian Open, Nadal’s PR issued a statement, in which he denied that the Spaniard would certainly play in Melbourne Park. Nadal’s aim is to play at the Australian Open but he is still not sure if he will recover in time and be able to play in Melbourne.

“It was a bit daring. I have a very good relationship with him and I understand his excitement and also that of the Australian Open, which is surely less than the excitement I have about going there. But from there to saying that I am going to be at the Australian Open seems very complicated to say today.

In fact, I don’t know and I’m working to try to recover. Therefore, my way of understanding my moment is that I do not need dates, but rather I need to simply work day by day with enthusiasm and with the right mentality to try to recover,” Nadal said.
