WWE removes 30-year-old champion from major event lineup

A planned appearance for a rising champion has been called off, and it once again shows how tightly WWE controls talent working outside its system.
Aaron Rourke, the current Men’s Evolve Champion, was scheduled to compete at Limitless Wrestling on June 20. That booking is no longer happening after WWE stepped in and enforced a contractual restriction.
The promotion confirmed the change in a statement, pointing to standard contractual obligations tied to WWE-affiliated talent.
It is a familiar explanation, but the timing stands out. Rourke has been gaining attention in recent months, including an appearance on NXT as a guest judge alongside Kit Wilson during the Mr. NXT contest, which was won by Shiloh Hill.
This was not a one-off situation. Around the same time, several WWE I.D. talents were also removed from Dreamwave Wrestling’s All Star Weekend on June 19 and 20.
The promotion announced that Veronica Haven, Sloane Jacobs, Anya Rune, and Laynie Luck would no longer appear after being informed of similar contractual obligations.
The difference between the cases is worth noting. Rourke is a champion tied to WWE’s broader development system, so protecting him fits into long-term plans. The I.D. talents are earlier in their careers and rarely seen on television. Even so, WWE still chose to pull them, which signals a wider shift in how the company manages its talent pool.
For smaller promotions, this kind of change can be difficult to handle. Cards are built around advertised names, and sudden withdrawals can disrupt planning and fan expectations. Even if ticket sales hold steady, the credibility hit is real.
From WWE’s side, the approach is consistent with its current direction. The company is putting more focus on in-house shows and controlled environments, especially with NXT gradually expanding its live event schedule again.
