FOX had other plans for WWE

The two most historic WWE weekly shows and the most-watched at the time of WWE’s programming of the week on American TV, are Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown, with the two shows going live every Monday and every Friday for years now, each on a different US broadcaster.

Monday Night Raw has in fact been broadcast for some time on the USA Network television screens, the main channel of the NBC Universal group, while the sister show on Friday night and therefore Friday Night Smackdown, is broadcast on FOX television screens.

Even NXT, in recent years, has reached an agreement with USA Network to be broadcast on Tuesday on the same channel as Raw, with WWE having managed to raise a lot of money from these contracts. Apparently, however, initially, FOX’s offer was instead to take the broadcasting rights of the red show and then Raw, with this argument that was however little dealt with, given that the show ultimately remained firm in the weekly programming of USA Network, without being modified.

FOX had other plans

In the latest update arrived via the Wrestling Observer microphones, thanks to the usual Dave Meltzer, we learn how FOX has made an offer in the past to take the rights to Raw, but in the end, USA Network has raised its offer, maintaining a strong relationship with WWE.

In fact, in his newsletter, Meltzer stated: “It was a unique situation because there were several factors in between. The deal was that FOX wanted Raw and not Smackdown. The USA had the right to make any offer, so they had decided to offer Raw to FOX.

FOX, at one point, then wanted Smackdown. By then, USA had spent a lot of money on Raw, it was like ‘We won’t make you take Smackdown’, but in the end, the numbers just got up.” WWE has managed to raise its revenue numbers so much thanks to this upside game by USA Network, with the broadcaster trying not to let the blue or red show go into the hands of the competition, without however obtaining the desired result.
