Former WWE star recalls dream clash with Gunther: "I lost but gai

Shanky recently opened up about his one-on-one bout with Gunther during WWE’s Superstar Spectacle in 2023. It wasn’t televised, but to him it was huge. Representing India on such a massive platform was always one goal. When he stepped into the ring with Gunther, who held the Intercontinental Championship at the time, Shanky felt he was part of something more than just a match.

The match ended in defeat for Shanky, but he says that outcome doesn’t define the moment. Injuries, outside pressures, ups and downs he’s had them all. Standing opposite The Ring General, in front of his home crowd in Hyderabad, taught him more about what it takes to compete at WWE’s highest levels.

Lessons from the loss

Shanky says his journey in WWE has been long and winding: many setbacks, many times doubting. But wrestling Gunther gave him clarity. Not just about his in-ring skills, but about discipline, mental toughness, timing. Those lessons, he believes, will shape what he does next. He doesn’t regret loss. If anything, he’s grateful for the chance to measure himself, see where he fits among the best, and understand the gaps he needs to close.

He also feels honoured. Wearing his country’s colours in front of an Indian audience, during a major WWE show, weighing not just personal ambition but national pride these things added weight to the match. He says it felt special to be that representation.

Even though he didn’t walk away with win, Shanky insists this was not a moment of failure, but one of growth. He believes moments like these define more than championship belts. They build character, push limits, and sometimes, that’s more valuable.
