Mark Henry Urged Tony Khan to Sign Ex-WWE Star Immediately

The AEW fans and backstage officials, including WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry, have embraced Shelton Benjamin’s signing, and the former WWE Intercontinental champion is back in business. As Benjamin focused solely on WWE for 14 years over two different periods, Henry immediately requested that AEW hire him after Benjamin was released from WWE in 2023. He teamed up with MVP, Bobby Lashley, and Cedric Alexander to form the popular group, ‘The Hurt Business,’ but again found himself without a contract.
Henry discussed the same on Busted Open Radio where he explained when and how he convinced Benjamin to join AEW. After the wrestler’s release, Henry explained how he contacted AEW’s President, Tony Khan. This was done even before the news broke.
“Shelton was let go on a Monday; I went to Tony. I said, ‘Tony, you got to pick him in. Bring him in. Let me work with him. Anything. He’s the guy,’” Henry explained. “Nothing happened. I am happy that they have changed their minds and brought him in. Shelton is special. You have to use him like he is special because, in the end, it is only going to be good for everyone.”
Impressive WWE Legacy
Although never winning a world championship during his time with WWE, Benjamin’s career achievements make for an extensive list. He has captured the United States Championship title, was a three-time Intercontinental Champion and eight-time tag team champion; twice with Charlie Haas and once with Cedric Alexander. His athletic build and in-ring ability has been highlighted by many making him a worthwhile signing to AEW.
Benjamin made his AEW debut on October 2 on *AEW Dynamite*, where he partnered with MVP, a former teammate from the Hurt Business. Henry is of the view that the seasoned grappler could one day be one of the top wrestlers in the AEW brand.
