Adam Copeland Talks AEW Focus on Storylines

AEW has been criticized throughout its history for leaning more towards “dream matches” rather than building long-term stories. While it is exciting for fans to see elite wrestlers go against each other, many argue that it is the stories that ultimately attract, engage, and retain fans.

Recently, AEW wrestler Adam Copeland commented on this trend and said that more attention is now paid to stories. In AMNY, he reiterated what he said earlier: based on the current changes, AEW is returning to the storytelling standard.

He felt that while dream matches excite fans, there is a limit to how many times they can feature it. “It feels like we’re getting more storyline emphasis because dream matches can only happen too frequently. How sustainable is it?” Copeland said.

“Story is consistent. A good story can go on and on, and then there’s always the potential of returning to it”. Copeland, however, referred to the currently undefeated Swerve Strickland, who is undertaking a feud with “Hangman” Adam Page, which is a testament to the AEW style they are returning to as a company.

This war, which began last year, heated up once more recently in the lead-up to AEW’s All Out pay-per-view. Their matchup peaked at the All Out pay-per-view in a cage match, which Page came out on top of after a highly challenging contest.

Copeland Talks About Missing AEW Due to Injury

Copeland, a former AEW TNT Champion, has been absent from AEW since fracturing his tibia during a steel cage match against Malakai Black at AEW Double or Nothing. He’s training for a return, with recent photos showing him alongside fellow AEW stars Dax Harwood, Cash Wheeler, and Darby Allin.

Although injured, Copeland remains up to date with AEW’s main line-ups, as he recently did all-in last month and also AEW All-In at Wembley Stadium. Missing the event was the hardest for Copeland, as he made such remarks, especially as he considers the venue very dear to his heart.
