Tony Khan explains why AEW stages so many world title matches on free television

Two AEW voices spoke this week about value — one about what the company owes its audience, the other about what he still owes himself. Together they explain more about how All Elite Wrestling positions itself than any ratings number.

Speaking to Case Lowe of Chicago's Q101, Tony Khan was pressed on a striking statistic: AEW has staged 13 world title matches on free television in 2026 alone, against 11 across the whole of 2024 and 2025 combined. Asked whether television partners were driving the shift, Khan pointed instead to standards.

"I think we're delivering at the highest level and it's great having these championship fights," Khan said. "And when AEW's at our very best, I think you can tune in and expect to see the top stars fighting each other in huge matches and big rivalries."

He framed the strategy as a service to fans priced out of pay-per-view, arguing they should not have to miss elite wrestling: "our fans are having their cake and eating it, too." Paul Wight, 54, offered a different kind of value statement to Joey Franchize, explaining why he chose AEW in 2021 rather than a backstage post.

"When I started with AEW Tony Khan, the biggest thing was I could compete. That was the biggest hang-up for me. I wanted to still compete," he said. He was blunt about office work, recalling that WWE once approached him about producing: "Please don't do that to me. I'll qui
